Mary and Stuart Manley began Barter Books in the old Alnwick Station in June 1991. Over the years, the shop grew from its original 200 sq feet to its present-day 8000 sq feet – probably as much to the surprise of its owners as to everyone else! Part of the pleasure for Stuart and Mary has been to restore both the station interior as and when they could, as well as its public use - this time in terms of a vibrant secondhand bookshop, Buffet, and venue for talks and debates - all of which attract over 250,000 visitors a year. Home of the original Keep Calm and Carry On poster, Barter Books has also been listed as one of the twenty most beautiful bookshops in the world. It is Stuart and Mary's hope that someday the original Alnmouth-Alnwick branchline will also be restored to what is probably one of the most magnificent station buildings for a town its size in the world.
