Maximise your web advertising

Northumberland Tourism Business Support
Business & Marketing Manager, Cris Brown has provided some top tips on how to make your advertising effective.

During 2017 over 1.3 million users actively engaged with visitnorthumberland.com, looking for information to help them plan a holiday or day trip to Northumberland.

We currently have over 450 accommodation providers and over 200 attractions/food & drink businesses advertising on the website, so how do you ensure your web listing stands out and catches the eye of a potential visitor?

Photography

A picture speaks a thousand words...

Select images that show your business at its best and allow potential visitors to imagine themselves there enjoying a Northumberland holiday.

Ensure that images are up to date.

Consider adding seasonal images. E.g. a roaring fire with views of snow outside or sun loungers in the garden. You can amend your listing at any time, so you may wish to add these at the appropriate times.

Images should be 600 pixels wide by 450 pixels high. If they are other sizes the website will adjust them but this may impact on your image quality.

For enhanced website entries:

o Select a variety of images – internal, external, views and the surrounding area

o We recommend no more than ten images – you are aiming to whet their appetite but leave enough curiosity and desire that they contact you and book

o Carefully select your default image – this is the first image the visitor will see.

Overview

This is your text description and after your photographs, it is your next opportunity to captivate your audience and encourage them to contact you to book.

Include your Unique Selling Points (USPs) – reasons a potential visitor should pick your business.

Use your text to inspire.

Don’t bore the reader with endless amounts of text. Remember they can always find out more information from your website.

For accommodation listings ensure it doesn’t sound like an estate agents description.

Don’t list all the facilities, instead use the facilities section and select the appropriate icons.

Re-read your description after writing it – does it describe the type of place you could imagine staying or visiting?

Social Media

With an enhanced website entry we can add your Facebook and Twitter feeds.

If you choose to have your feeds displayed do ensure that you regularly post on your social media accounts.
