Chinese Lantern Danger

Firefighters in Northumberland are warning about the dangers of releasing Chinese lanterns following a fire on Holy Island on the 6th April.

This fire was caused by lanterns being blown onto the dunes where the candles ignited dry grass. Fires caused in this way can spread very quickly and destroy large areas of natural undergrowth or crop land. Lanterns also pose dangers for farm animals and wildlife which can ingest the wire used in the construction of Chinese Lanterns. Concerns have also been raised by the RNLI after an increase in false emergency lifeboat call outs when lanterns have been mistaken for distress flares. Accommodation providers are urged to discourage their guests from releasing Chinese Lanterns while they are staying in Northumberland.
