Energy Savings Tips from Northumberland utility experts, Intelligent Gas and Power.

Northumberland workshopRising utility costs represent a big issue for all tourism business operators regardless of size. Unfortunately, winter energy bills are typically 20% higher than at other times of year.

However, with a few small changes, those costs can be reduced.

Here are 5 top tips from Intelligent Gas & Power to help you keep your bills low this winter:

1. Switch

Switching supplier is hassle free, takes only a few weeks to complete and is one of the easiest ways to cut energy bills. If you’ve been with the same supplier for a while think about switching.

2. Health check

A FREE Utility Health Check for all Northumberland tourism businesses through until the end of December. The check includes a dedicated account manager and full tariff optimisation on gas, oil, electric, water, waste and merchant services, thus identifying where you’re losing money and where changes could be made.

3. Switch off equipment

In just 1 year, a desktop computer and monitor will use as much as £10 while on standby. Multiply that by 10 and your business could save £100 a year simply by switching off computers when not in use.

4. Turn the heating down

According to the Energy Saving Trust, turning down the thermostat by just one degree will save the average 3 bed semi detached home around £90 a year.

5. Watch your water use

In the home, hot water accounts for around 10% of the average energy bill, and though it’s less than this in business premises it’s still one to watch. Consider whether the hours of availability of hot water can be reduced and watch out for any dripping hot water taps as the amount of wastage they create is surprising. Don’t forget, if you haven’t switched water supplier since market deregulation you can guarantee to save money by simply switching.
