Board appointment - vacancies

The Board of Visit Northumberland Ltd are seeking to appoint 3 new board members to ensure we have the capacity and skills to deliver the aspirations of Visit Northumberland and support the Northumberland Destination Management Plan.

This is an exciting time to join the board. We are looking for individuals who have a connection to tourism and the visitor economy, with a particular interest or expertise in skills and training, treasurer and company secretary, transport and the environment, policy and lobbying, and research. These roles are unpaid, voluntary positions, however, reasonable expenses are paid.

About the roles

We would expect that different candidates will bring a range of skills and experience to Visit Northumberland, over and above an understanding of the breath of the visitor economy – at local, regional and national level the passion to act as an ambassador for Northumberland, the understanding of the standards and corporate requirements of a board member, and a commitment to equality and diversity.

These skills include:

- Previous board experience

- Partnership building, team working and team leading

- Financial and treasurer experience, and the experience to interrogate financial reports

- Research and analytical experience

- Human resources, skills and training

- Place and infrastructure

- Communication, PR, digital and social media media

- Business and strategic planning and risk management

- Environmental issues

Visit Northumberland brings together the expertise of Northumberland Tourism (the official Destination Management Organisation for Northumberland) and the proactive tourism team based within Northumberland County Council. The executive team are led by a private sector board, each board member has distinct responsibilities linked to the priorities of the organisation and the destination management plan.

Visit Northumberland Board of Directors

The Visit Northumberland board is representative of the visitor economy of Northumberland and is comprised of a maximum of 10 (including observers) with the right balance of sector knowledge, skills and experiences. The board will be responsible for approving the relevant strategy and implementation plans and achievement therein, they will also steer the development of the Destination Management Plan and the relevant action planning groups. They will also set performance targets for the operational team.

Our vision is to develop a destination organisation with an outstanding record of successful delivery which puts the County firmly on the map as a premier visitor destination and proactively leads the tourism business community in Northumberland.

Visit Northumberland holds 6 board meetings per year, which board members are expected to attend, as well as being active in support of the organisation and the profile of the visitor economy board meetings. This would include acting as an ambassador for Northumberland, advising the staff team, and attending action groups connected to board members identified specialisms.

Board meetings are usually held in the afternoon, early evenings and in agreed locations in Northumberland, there is also the option to join virtually.
